Constructed crack — no photographic origin
Far from the centers of power — geographically, economically, in every ledger that claims to measure what matters — these women stand even further still. In the places these ethnicities call home, women are often the ones furthest from any seat of power.
And yet they are the keepers. Not in defiance of anyone — simply because someone must hold the ancestral rituals that shape who a people is, and so shape who these women are, too. Identity kept alive not as a statement, but as a quiet, daily act of continuity.
Guardians like these exist everywhere — in every world, every ledger, every center and every margin. Giuseppe chose to photograph them at the furthest possible distance from power, not because that is where they only exist, but because at that distance, what a guardian is becomes impossible not to see. Custodi is not about one part of the world losing its way. It is about the reference points that remain, wherever we are, for whenever we do.
